Venice, Italy has its main terminal at the Marco Polo International Airport.  A secondary airport, the Venice Treviso Airport, is used by budget airlines and charter carriers.  The two airports both offer flights to all major cities in the United Kingdom, giving travelers many options when planning a trip.

Venice is located in northeastern Italy and is famous for its canals and gondolas. Another famous travel landmark in the city surrounded by water is the Bridge of Sighs.  According to legend, the bridge grants eternal love to any couple that kisses beneath its arches as the sun goes down.

St. Mark’s Square is a big tourist attraction.  Among its treasures are the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace.  Legend has it that Casanova tunneled from the Palace to freedom. Venice is also well known for its Renaissance art, with the Tintoretto and Titian frescoes in the Palace and the treasures of the Santa Maria dei Frari church.

One of the most famous festivals is the Carnival of Venice, which was founded in 1268.  Carnival starts around two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Fat Tuesday.  Carnival was banned by the Fascist government before being revived in the 1980s.  Masks are a big part of the Carnival, and the masks can either cover the entire face or just the person’s eye area.

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world and one of its most prestigious. Founded in 1932, the festival takes place in late August or early September in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi.

Venetian cuisine is simple, using local olive oil, vegetables, fruits, wine, and cheese. Venetians also enjoy prosciutto, salami, and other cured meats.
